COAL TAR SEALER
vs.
DO-IT-YOURSELF
SEALER
All bulk products available in the Twin Cities area are
formulated to meet specifications for both state and federal jobs. That means at
least 50% "solids" content. Solids consist of what is left on the pavement
after the liquids have been absorbed by the pavement or evaporated.
In comparison, the retail products purchased in
5-gallon pails have a solids content usually ranging from 8-22%, although they may be
labeled "Professional Strength" or "Professional Grade." As a
rule, the higher the retail products cost, the higher the percentage of solids.
Each manufacturer of bulk products pumps out a
high-quality product into the contractors' tanks. Since the products are intended
for sale over a large area, they are sold as "concentrates" and are intended to
be diluted with water. If the product is not diluted, it does not cure properly,
"tracks" on shoes and is carried into homes and businesses.
Additives can greatly improve the life and performance of
coal tar sealers. Aurora Asphalt & Sealcoating adds rubber additives and
silica sand to its sealer. Silica sand provides a non-slip surface. Sand
"loads" are generally 3-6 pounds per gallon of product.
